南韓17日公布中東呼吸症候群冠狀病毒(MERS-CoV)確診病例新增8例，累計確診患者達162人，當天第42例54歲女性在接受治療時死亡，MERS喪生者增至20人。
南韓保健福祉部中央MERS管理對策本部表示，這名病故的患者於5月15-19日在平澤聖母醫院感染MERS病毒，25日出現症狀，6月5日確診，生前患有支氣管擴張症和高血壓等疾病。
截至17日，南韓MERS確診患者共162人，其中19人痊癒出院，20人死亡，MERS的致死率達12.34％，而接受治療的123名患者中有17人病情不穩定。當局表示，死者中有18人患有慢性病或是高齡，屬於感染MERS病毒的高危險群。
南韓爆發MERS疫情，世界衛生組織（WHO）表示，這對國際社會是一大警訊，各國應該做好準備，對應隨時可能大爆發的疫情，不過迄無證據顯示MERS在南韓出現社區感染，因此沒有必要建議對南韓發布旅行或貿易禁令。
南韓總統朴槿惠17日首度視察保健福祉部中央MERS管理對策本部，並會見MERS專家應變小組，要求相關部門做好防疫工作。對策本部表示，政府首階段目標是爭取在6月底之前使MERS疫情趨緩。
另外，在中歐的捷克，1名男子自南韓返國後疑似感染MERS病毒，住進布拉格的醫院，檢驗結果17日出爐，證實並未感染。捷克並無MERS確診病例。
